The development of the clock ranks among the greatest of man's scientific achievements. Indeed, it is true to say that without the possiblity of accurate measurement of time, our highly complex, modern industrial society would not exist as we know it today.
This book traces the origins of the clock -from a simple method of regulating the daily routine of the mediaeval monastery, through to the founding of the Clockmaker's Company in the 17th century and the invention of the pendulum - an event that had particular significance as it made possible, for the first time, accurate timekeeping, thus paving the way for the Industrial Revolution and a society governed by the clock.
The superb colour plates and line drawings in this book amply demonstrate the reasons why antique clocks excite such enthusiasm among today's collectors. In addition they provide a valuable source of reference. Contained in this volume is an extensive Bibliography, together with a list of museums where representative collections can be seen, and a list of the clockmakers whose work is featured in the book.
