This book as a wealth of information, so much it would take a chapter to list it. Britten begins his book at the beginning by brief explanation of time and its measurement to 1550 and this puts the remainder of the book into context for those who know very little.
Chapter two covers the next hundred years and the decorations used and subsequent chapters track the development of clocks and watches over the centuries.
The first appendix is entitled 'Records of famous makers', thirty pages of wonderful insightful information on some of the most inspired of clock and watchmakers.
The second appendix is an alphabetic list of about 2,500 surnames, followed by given names and often a date(s) and a little information on each of these clock or watchmakers.
The third and final appendix contains hallmarks and marks which may be found on clocks and watches. There are lists of hallmarks from London 1678 - 1914; Edinburgh 1705-1977; Birmingham 1773-1914 and Chester.
A comprehensive picture of the development of clock and watch making, from an introduction of measuring time as a concept, to records of famous makers such as Nicholas Cratzer and David Ramsay.
This 9th edition revised by Cecil Clutton (1909-1991), who had a wide interest in antiquarian horology and was one of the founding members of the Antiquarian Horology Society.
