Westone W40 – Acoustic Steel-String Guitar (1980, Japan)
This exceptional guitar was built in 1980 by Matsumoku Co. in Nagano, Japan, as part of the mid-range models in Westone’s W series. At the time, only two higher-end models existed: the W60 and W80.
Westone guitars were distributed in Japan by Kanda Shokai Co. from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s. Matsumoku was a highly regarded Japanese manufacturer known for producing outstanding instruments for various brands, both domestic and international.
If you're familiar with high-end Martin guitars (and their prices), you’ll be amazed by the sound quality of this Westone W40. Despite being made with laminated wood, it delivers an outstanding tone, surpassing many solid-wood guitars available today. It offers impressive volume, fast response, and a rich, sparkling yet warm and lyrical tone with plenty of overtones and harmonics—making it a great choice for both stage and studio.
In 1980, this model was priced at 40,000 yen, which was quite significant compared to entry-level guitars that sold for around 15,000 yen or decent solid-top models at 35,000 yen. Many Japanese manufacturers at the time produced high-quality laminated guitars, some costing up to 80,000 yen.
Condition & Playability:
The guitar is in excellent condition for its age, with only a few minor marks on the back. It has no structural flaws, the neck is straight, and the fretboard and frets are in great shape. Its vintage tone easily rivals brand-new guitars selling for over $3,000 in the U.S. today.

The guitar will be shipped in a hard-shell case in very good condition. Before shipping, the strings will be loosened to prevent tension on the neck and soundboard. Due to this, minor adjustments to the neck may be needed after delivery, which can be easily done using the truss rod.
