Om Værket:
The commentary on First Peter by J. Ramsey Michaels is one of the stronger commentaries in the Word Biblical Commentary Series. It is scholarly in its approach and does an excellent job of interacting with the Greek text as well as discussing the pros and cons of the differing interpretations of the various passages. It also has nearly 45 pages of detailed introductory material. Among other matters, the introduction provides an excellent discussion of the date and authorship of this epistle. Michaels favors a date sometime between the Neronian and the Domitian persecution of the church. He appears to be sympathetic to the Petrine authorship of the epistle, arguing that we can neither conclusively establish Peter's authorship or rule it out.
Like many other volumes in the Word series, this is not a devotional commentary or one primarily designed for the layperson who simply wants a general overview of the epistle. It is a work of serious scholarship and will prove most beneficial to a person with a working knowledge of Greek and a fair amount of antecedent familiarity with the New Testament. For the serious scholar I cannot think of a commentary on 1 Peter that is superior.
