Om værket:
Simon DeVries's volume in the Word Biblical Commentary series is a worthy endeavor. The introduction discusses issues such as the geographical, political, and religious situation of the time, as well as the question of the time of composition. The commentary section of the volume discusses each passage of the text in detail, a discussion that includes both an interpretation of the text and significant textual criticism. The textual criticism is helpful, since it demonstrates how the final redactor wove together earlier narratives to create a unified account of Israel and Judah. There is plenty information for the scholar in this volume. However, there is a lot of material of value for someone primarily interested in getting an overview of 1 Kings. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary for benefitting from the commentary.
