Stand: Helt ny - uåbnet/med prismærke
I lived in the Swiss Alps, so the picture of a mountain landscape is deeply engraved in my subconscious. Especially late autumn mornings when the clouds rest in valleys, slowly rising to where they belong together with the rising sun. In the days when the air already feels crisp, we get greeted with nothing less than nature showcasing its rare and astonishing beauty.
In my book "Dreaming of a Life" by Rao Noma, I use the symbolism of a caterpillar changing its form to become a butterfly as a symbol for the personal transformation process. I went through the stages of being a caterpillar and lying dormant in a cocoon in the mountain surroundings. After this long internal journey, I hatched into a creature unknown to its predecessor – a flying joy for the eyes. And once my wings got strong enough, I flew in my new form into the fields filled with nectar.
It is a painting symbolising hope in the face of the unknown and the relief that comes when seasons change. Nothing is meant to last. All is well knowing that nature follows its rhythms and every caterpillar is meant to become a butterfly. In this case, Alpine Argus species – a tiny hairy beast 😌
After hours of working on the highest mountains, I struggled to see how the structure of the central massif would look. Usually if I lack an insight, I simply wait while working on another part of the painting, knowing that a realisation will come. This time was a bit different, as the days went by without a sudden clear knowing as an answer to my quest. But one morning, a week into my work, I woke up having seen a clear, structured image of that mountain site.
I am not the one to say how such processes work, but it sure feels like there's a touch of magic, mystery and a guided approach to my projects, including my paintings.
