1557 ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF METAMORPHOSES by Ovid (43 BC – AD 18) and translated in Italian by Lodovico Dolce (c.1508–1568), for the Venetian publisher Gabriel Giolito de’ Ferrari. Richly illustrated with 85 engravings by Giovanni Antonio Rusconi (c.1500–1578) an architect, painter, translator and illustrator of Vitruvius. The diagram of the winds that appears in many early Ovid editions, has here as in the first edition grown into a hemispherical map covering the Americas, Europe and Africa, with what is now the United States labelled "Nueva Hispania", the Straits of Magellan are also mentioned.
