"Vestindien - St. Croix, St. Thomas og St. Jan" fortæller historien om de tre vestindiske øer, der udviklede sig vidt forskelligt under og efter det danske kolonistyre, men alle havde slaveriet tilfælles.
Da slaveriet blev ophævet i 1848, forblev øernes sorte befolkning dybt forarmet. Med lovændringen mistede Dansk Vestindien sin økonomiske betydning for Danmark, hvilket var en medvirkende faktor til salget af øerne og deres befolkning til USA i 1917, hvor de blev omdøbt til US Virgin Islands.
"Vestindien" fortæller øernes historie set fra et vestindisk perspektiv, og trækker tråde helt frem til i dag, hvor interessen for øerne og Danmarks fælles fortid atter er i højsædet.
