Have you always thought of the Caro-Kann as a solid, but rather defensive opening? Then watch out! In the fast few years the popularity of the Caro has increased sharply, as it has become a regular weapon in the arsenal of such fighting players as Viktor Korchnoi, Jan Timman and Yasser Seirawan. All are noted for their aggressive und uncompromising approach to the game. It has also been used as a battleground for some of the great Kasparov v Karpov tussles.
As a result of its adoption by some of the most original and innovative players of the last decade, a wealth of new ideas have been introduced. Grandmaster Jon Speelman, who regularly employed the Caro-Kann in his own games, presents here his selection of the most theoretically important games.
Jon Speelman is a World Championship Semi-Finalist, and is one of the stars of the successful Englisch national team, which won the bronze medals in the 1990 Chess Olympiad, held at Nove Sad in Yugoslavia. As well as being an outstanding player, Jon Speelman is also a celebrated author, whose other best-selling books include Analysing the Endgame and Endgame Preparation.
