Den unge amerikaner Desmond T. Doss vil gerne være læge, så han melder sig som sygeplejer under 2. verdenskrig. Da han også er pacifist, nægter han at bære våben, hvilket militærets øverste ledelse finder både dumt og uansvarligt. Men Doss får lov til at tjene sit land, og i slaget ved Okinawa lykkes det ham at redde 75 af sine medsoldaters liv uden selv at tage ét eneste af sine fjenders. Mel Gibson er tilbage som instruktør og fortæller den sande historie om Desmond T. Doss, der blev den første militærnægter i amerikansk historie, som fik tildelt Æremedaljen.
