Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) rejser til en fjern udørk på det australske kontinent, hvor hun går i kompagniskab med en upoleret kvægdriver, the Drover (Hugh Jackman), for at redde den jord, hun har arvet. Deres indædte afsky for hinanden dæmpes, da Sarah pludselig står med ansvaret for en charmerende forældreløs dreng ved navn Nullah (Brandon Walters). Sammen med en utilpasset flok af løsarbejdere og småfarmere begiver de tre sig af sted med 1500 stykker kvæg tværs gennem Australiens bjergtagende, men nådesløse landskab. Under indflydelse af landets kraft og skønhed og forpligtelsen over for Nullah vokser Sarah med opgaven, og hendes anspændte forhold til the Drover afløses modstræbende af respekt, beundring og til sidst kærlighed. Men de når frem til Darwin, netop som den bliver bombet af japanerne, og Sarah og hendes umage ny familie bliver revet fra hinanden. For første gang i sit liv har Sarah noget at kæmpe for – de mennesker, hun elsker.
