This biography of Charles Haddon Spurgeon attempts to place the man within the framework of his time. The emphasis is upon Spurgeon as a representative Victorian, who succeeded because his values were those of the dominant middle class. This study also seeks to illuminate the motives which drove him, time after time, to seek the spotlight of controversy. C. H. Spurgeon remains highly influential among Christians of various denominations to this day.
Kruppa's Spurgeon bio is probably the only truly academic treatment of the great preacher's life and work written by a non-partisan, and especially valuable for just that reason. She doesn't merely presume he was chosen and led by God for his great work as providentially determined, but rather makes the effort to situate Spurgeon historically and socially, explaining his appeal and success (and controversies) through a strictly secular analysis of the mundane conditions that anchored and permeated his preaching and philanthropic heroics, while at the same time elaborating how instabilities in those very conditions vitiated Spurgeon's effectiveness when met with a characteristic theological intransigence that may well have betrayed some misjugments. Thus, while Kruppa in no way slights Spurgeon the man's greatness, and the grandness of his ministry, the story is not without pathos and even tragedy. For those wishing to see Spurgeon presented as a human character contra merely a divine vessel this volume is essential reading.
