"Joseph Austen was the first to make this type of measure in approximately 1790. He moved to North Main Street, Cork, with his son and produced the haystack or harvester from a gallon to a half gill size. Pewter Measures Originated in Ireland early 19th Century and were known as a “Haystack” or “Harvester” measure. By an act in 1907 it was made necessary for all measures to empty when tilted to an angle of 120 degrees, thus many earlier styles in measures are rare having been destroyed when submitted to Inspectors for verification. Based on research, it seems that there were lots of haystack reproductions made, so I do not know the exact age of this item, or if it is original or reproduction."
