Abstract: "The murder of Denmark’s highest official Poul Laxmand in 1502 and the ensuing confiscation of his property have given rise to much scholarly discussion involving detailed Danish investigations. The general background, causes and the possible complicity of the king in the liquidation have been the main issues, along with the political repercussions of the events. Taking its starting point in a dissertation by Henry Bruun from 1959, the present work aims to illuminate the affair in a both political and legal context by the inclusion of the entire surviving source material. It does not solve the actual riddle behind the murder, but aims at a critical analysis of a number of those circum stances which have given rise to doubt and discussion about motiva tion. The subsequent trial and the judgment against the dead Poul Laxmand are taken into consideration, and the possible influence of the events on the relation between the king and the leading estates and reciprocally between these estates is also treated."
