William Blake - Songs of innocence and of Experience
The 'Illuminated Books' in which William Blake wrote out his poems with a surrounding design, etched each page and coloured it by hand, are now museum pieces, and even facsimile reproductions can be obtained only at high prices. Not until recently has it been possible to achieve relatively inexpensive colour reproductions of Blake's plates that approximate what he himself would have approved. The present volume is the first to make such colour reproductions available in paperback form.
The 54 plates Blake made for the Songsof Innocence and of Experience have been
reproduced for this edition in six- and eight-colour offset, the same size as the originals. The text of each poem is given in letterpress on the page facing the colour
plate, and a brief commentary by Sir Geoffrey Keynes, editor of Blake's Complete Writings, follows each plate. The plates have been reproduced and the volume printed in France under the direction of the Trianon Press of Paris, who for the past twenty years have been producing limited, hand-coloured editions of the Illuminated Books for the William Blake Trust of London. Published in association with The Trianon Press.
