He began his career at the company in 1953 and quickly became a central figure in design and product development. Lundgren is considered the mastermind behind several of Ikea's most iconic pieces of furniture, including the world-famous Billy bookcase introduced in 1979 and which continues to be a bestseller.
During his time at Ikea, Lundgren designed over 400 pieces of furniture and products. His design philosophy was to create simple, functional solutions that suited people's everyday needs. He was also responsible for introducing the idea of flat packages for furniture, which revolutionized Ikea's production and distribution system.
Lundgren's work and influence at Ikea has been internationally recognized. He was awarded the Tenzing Prize in 2012 for his significant contributions to the company and its success. The jury's justification highlighted his close collaboration with Ingvar Kamprad and their shared vision of creating a better everyday life for people all over the world.
Gillis Lundgren's legacy extends far beyond the confines of Ikea. His design classics live on and his innovative ideas have changed not only the furniture industry but also the way we think about design and home decor.
