Erpé Model 52 Art Deco Desk Lamp — Brussels, Belgium, circa 1920–1930
An iconic and highly collectible Erpé Model 52 desk lamp, produced in Brussels during the interwar period by Établissements Ritzen & Penners, the distinguished Belgian manufacturer founded in 1914 by Léon Ritzen and Frans Penners.
Often referred to as a notary’s lamp or banker’s lamp, this rare industrial design perfectly captures the refined transition between early European Art Deco and the emerging functionalist language of Bauhaus modernism.
Its striking architectural composition features a tiered black cast-iron base, a gracefully curved wrought-iron arm, and an elegantly proportioned bakelite shade, creating a silhouette of remarkable balance and sculptural clarity. Marked both on the upper support and underside, the lamp retains its original industrial identity and historical integrity.
The bakelite shade — among the most sought-after features of this model — remains in excellent vintage condition, free from cracks, chips, or structural weakness. Gentle surface discoloration and minor paint wear to the ironwork reflect nearly a century of age while preserving the lamp’s authentic visual character.
Fully functional and beautifully preserved, this piece remains as practical today as it is decorative. Its timeless industrial sophistication makes it equally compelling in a classic Scandinavian interior, a modernist workspace, or a curated collector’s setting.
A true emblem of Belgian industrial Art Deco, increasingly difficult to source in complete and original condition.
