The Story and Condition
Step into the golden era of Japanese sports watches with this spectacular Seiko 5 Sports Speed-Timer. Produced in July 1971, the reference 7017-8000 is a highly sought-after JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) classic that perfectly captures the bold, adventurous spirit of 1970s horology.
What makes the 7017 caliber so special is its brilliantly clean layout. Unlike traditional chronographs, it features no sub-dials, offering a sleek, uncluttered aesthetic while still functioning as a highly capable "flyback" chronograph. The deep charcoal dial is brought to life by striking orange accents, including the sweeping central chronograph hand, the iconic "Speed-Timer" text, and the rare inner Pulsimeter scale used originally by doctors and athletes to measure heart rates. Housed in a robust 41mm stainless steel cushion case, this watch commands attention on the wrist. To complete the restoration, a brand-new crystal has been installed, offering a flawless, unobstructed view of this stunning dial. Furthermore, this piece is fitted with its original stainless steel bracelet. Finding these vintage Seiko models with their original bracelets intact and in such great condition is increasingly rare, making this a truly exceptional find for collectors.
The Value of a Fully Serviced Chronograph
Vintage mechanical chronographs are notoriously complex, and buying an unserviced piece usually means anticipating an expensive and lengthy trip to the watchmaker. This timepiece, however, has been newly and thoroughly overhauled.
The entire movement has been completely dismantled, carefully cleaned, freshly lubricated, and precisely regulated. The automatic winding, quickset day/date, and the intricate flyback chronograph functions all perform flawlessly. By purchasing a freshly serviced watch, you are saving hundreds of euros in specialized service fees and months of waiting time. This premium condition is factored into the value of the watch, ensuring that you are investing in a timepiece that is entirely free of hidden issues and ready to be enjoyed straight out of the box.

User Guide & Important Notes
How to use the Pulsimeter (Base 15)
The inner chapter ring features a "Pulsimeter Base 15" scale, a fascinating tool originally designed for medical professionals and athletes. To use it:
Locate your pulse.
Start the chronograph function by pressing the top pusher.
Count exactly 15 heartbeats.
Stop the chronograph immediately on the 15th beat.
Look at where the orange chronograph hand points on the inner scale—that number is your exact heart rate in beats per minute (BPM).
Chronograph Hand: Running vs. Stationary
A common question with vintage chronographs is whether it is safe to leave the chronograph hand running constantly to act as a standard seconds hand.
Because the Seiko caliber 7017 utilizes an advanced vertical clutch system, leaving the chronograph engaged and running continuously will not damage the movement or cause excessive wear to the gear train, unlike traditional lateral clutch chronographs. In fact, many watchmakers argue that leaving a vertical clutch running relieves tension on the clutch spring. You are perfectly safe to leave it sweeping all day if you enjoy the visual motion, or you can leave it reset at the 12 o'clock position to slightly extend the watch's power reserve. The choice is entirely yours!
