The history of the famous Morgenfrue (Marigold) tableware is a fantastic tale of Danish design history, and it serves as the perfect example of how the ties between Aluminia and Royal Copenhagen were woven together.
Here is the story behind the iconic pattern:
🎨 The Design and the Creator
The Morgenfrue pattern was originally shaped and designed by the legendary ceramicist and artist Nils Thorsson (1898–1975), who served as the artistic director for Aluminia from 1933 to 1969. Thorsson was a pivotal figure in modernizing Danish earthenware and bringing about its golden age during the mid-20th century.
☀️ Appearance and Characteristics
The service is instantly recognizable and radiates the essence of a bright Danish summer:
The Colors: It is characterized by its distinctive, solid yellow earthenware base, decorated with delicate, hand-painted motifs of orange and reddish-brown marigolds alongside green leaves.
The Wickerwork: The shape of the tableware features an elegant, scalloped edge and a subtle, relief-like wickerwork pattern molded directly into the ceramic, giving the plates and bowls a beautiful texture and depth.
🏭 Production Period and the Name Change
Morgenfrue was an extremely popular everyday and summerhouse service during the middle of the 20th century, and its timeline perfectly reflects the fusion of the two factories:
The Aluminia Era: The pattern was introduced in the 1930s/1940s and was produced as a classic Aluminia earthenware service.
The Royal Copenhagen Era: When the Aluminia name was phased out in 1969, the Morgenfrue pattern remained so popular that production continued. Because of this, you can find the exact same cups and plates stamped with the classic Royal Copenhagen three-waves hallmark on the bottom.
The pattern finally went out of production in the 1970s, which means that any Morgenfrue piece you come across today is a genuine vintage collector's item.
