A System of Chronology af James Playfair. Gigantisk Folio bind. Bogen er en halv meter høj! 50,5 cm. høj x 33 cm. bred x 5 cm. tyk. Når den ligger åben på bordet er den 68 cm. bred.
Aldeles gigantisk, kæmpe stor bog fra 1784 som ingen forlag har turde kaste sig ud i at fremstille de sidste par hundrede år. Formatet er det man kalder Elefant Folio, da det er den største kategori af bøger der findes.
Et aldeles fremragende værk om verdens og Bibelens kronologi. Se nærmere på billederne for at få et godt indtryk af værket og læs endelig hele den meget lange titel nedenfor.
Hvis man giver sig tid til at studerer dette skønne værk, får man virkelig del i fortidens viden på en ganske anden måde end nogen skærm kan formidle. Bogen er virkelig stor, og på meget lækkert håndlavet papir fra 1700 tallet. Den maner til ro og eftertænkning. Den er der ligesom og kræver opmærksomhed i kraft af sin overmåde store størrelse. Emnet i den er nu også overordentlig interessant og kan give både ro og viden. To så sjældne ting i vore dage. En vidunderlig oplevelse at sidde med dette smukke værk der, i åben stand, er en halv meter høj og 68 cm. bred. Den fylder altså noget. I et hvert storslået bibliotek bør der være et værk der er kronen på værket. Det er præcist hvad dette værk vil være i enhver bogsamling. Trykt i 1784, eller M,DCC,LXXXIV. Fra røgfrit hjem.

II. A chronological history, which exhibits a connected view of the time, mode, and circumstances of the origin, progress, decline, and fall of every considerable kingdom, from the earliest period to the present.
III. A list of several eclipses before the Christian aera, observed by astronomers, or recorded by historians and of all eclipses from A.D. 1, to A.D. 1900, with an explanatory preface.
IV. A chronological list of councils, in which the date, place, and subject of every council are specified. V. Chronological tables and charts from B.C. 2300 to A.D. 1784, adapted to a scale and ascertaining the duration of the lives and reigns of the most eminent personages in all ages.
VI. A list of remarkable events and occurrences relating to every kingdom and nation, from the earliest agest to the present time ; with the dates of many celestial phaenomena.
VII. Supplemental tables illustrating the several parts of the system.
VIII. A copious biographical index, in which the dates of the reigns of Kings, and of the lives of remarkable men in all ages, are inserted, and cocise characters of both are occasionally given / by James Playfair, D. D., Member of the Antiquarian Society of Scotland.

The first of the literary endeavours of James Playfair (1738-1819), a Church of Scotland minister. His preferred style was the compendious compilation, and his other works included a ‘System of Geography’, a ‘General Atlas’, and a ‘Geographical and Statistical Description of Scotland’. This work compiles chronological histories of countries, empires, eclipses, etc., with elaborate charts illustrating chronological overlaps in different areas.

James Playfair FRSE (1736–1819) was a Scottish minister, academic and author and a figure in the Scottish Enlightenment.
He was born in 1736 at Knowhead of Bendochy (a farm) in Perthshire the son of George Playfair (d. 1786), a farmer, and his wife, Jean Roger (d. 1804).
He studied at St Andrews University and then was ordained as minister of Newtyle (1770–77) and then translated to Meigle (1777–1800). He was then appointed Principal of St Andrews University in 1800. During this period he was also minister of St Leonard's Church in St Andrews.
In 1779 St Andrews awarded him an honorary doctorate (DD). In 1787 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were John Playfair (a distant cousin) and Alexander Fraser Tytler.
He was the official historiographer of the then Prince of Wales.
He died at Dalmarnock near Glasgow on 26 May 1819. He is buried in Glasgow but is also memorialised on the grave of his wife in the churchyard of St Andrews Cathedral.
