The 'Subconscious Self' means the joy and the tragedy of our past encounters, experiences, and childhood memories. Some of them we manage to mould into happiness and ease-bringing life circumstances; others haunt us like dogs in the night. In one ayahuasca ceremony many years back I entered a space of shock, a space where trauma happened. To put it shortly, I was shown that my mother got scared of a dog, as she always feared dogs, while she was pregnant with me. Her emotional state became mine as we were nothing less than one body, one interacting stream of consciousness. Her emotional reaction became my background noise, engraved in the back of my mind – not visible, not approachable, beyond my reach. That's the power of subconscious thought. I can't begin to imagine the ripple effect it had on my personality, my health, my decisions. I just know that deep inner work, facing the inner demons, has changed not only me for the calmer and wiser version of myself, but it has also brought me change in life's circumstances, which is only possible due to changed inner reflection. The outside is nothing but a mirror of the inner picture all of us have painted for ourselves. Fear of change could only keep us safe if the world we live in were still. By suppressing those feelings, we might end up looking like a caricature of ourselves. The inner conflict it creates is powerful as a storm turning ocean waters upside down. What's left is then being suppressed, costing us mental, physical health and life quality.
