The work was done as part of the Bio-Value platform funded under the SPIR initiative by the Danish Council for Strategic Research and The Danish Council for Technology and Innovation.
The project was done in collaboration with Haldor Topsøe A/S (HTAS), and the experimental work presented have either been completed at the Department of Chemistry (DTU) or in the New Business R&D department (HTAS).
The thesis is divided into 7 chapters. Chapter 1 presents the motivation and introduces the field and state of the art of carbohydrate conversion using stannosilicates. Chapter 2 details the experimental procedures used to synthesize, characterize and test the catalysts. Chapters 3 to 6 present the main results obtained including a brief introduction at the beginning of each chapter and concluding remarks at the end. Chapter 3 describes the effect of tin on the hydrothermal synthesis of Sn-Beta. Chapter 4 details the optimization of methyl lactate using an alkali cosolute. Chapter 5 investigates the pathways involved in the conversion of carbohydrates. Chapter 6 describes the use of shape selectivity to convert glycolaldehyde into valuable products. Chapter 7 provides an overarching conclusion across all chapters.
