”A Concise Contrastive Grammar of English” is a pedagogical introduction to English grammar for Danish students of English at bachelor level. At the same time the book is a practical tool of reference for the Danish-speaking English teacher.
The reader is guided through the labyrinth of the English grammatical landscape and is introduced to English grammar as well as to basic sentence analysis. The book gives a systematic description of English and covers all the major areas of English grammar. It contains definitions and explanations as well as a large number of examples from a wide range of material (newspapers, magazines, literature, spoken language, etc.). Special attention has been paid to areas that are known to cause problems for Danes who are learning English at a fairly advanced level. Wherever relevant, parallels have been drawn to Danish grammar and the most important differences between Danish and English have been highlighted.
The present fourth edition has been thoroughly revised, primarily for pedagogical reasons, and in many cases on the recommendations of colleagues and students. Hundreds of minor changes and additions have been made, several sections have been completely rewritten and expanded, and extra examples of analysis using both tree diagrams and vertical lines and slashes have been added, all in order to bring the book up to date and make it more profitable to the users.
