I 1937 besøgte hun Haiti for at studere Voodoo.
I 1975 skrev Alice Walker artiklen "In Search of Zora Neale Hurston" om denne halvglemte figur. Siden er Hurstons litterær renommé blevet genoprettet.
Zora Neale Hurston (January 7, 1891 – January 28, 1960) was an American writer and anthropologist.
Hurston was born in Alabama, but her family moved to Florida when she was a child.
She was trained as an anthropologist and worked with Franz Boas and Margaret Mead. She was also an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance and used her anthropological teachings to write several novels about Florida's poor black citizens. In 1937, she visited Haiti to study Voodoo. In the later years of her life, she had financial and health problems, and had to work, among other things, as a chambermaid. She died in a Florida poorhouse in 1960 and was buried in an unmarked grave.
In 1975, Alice Walker wrote the article "In Search of Zora Neale Hurston" about this half-forgotten figure. Hurston's literary reputation has since been restored.
