The book , hardcover, was published in english in 1993.
There is no formal Long chronological explanation of BOUCHERON family history, which would make for boring Reading, the story comes naturally through the pictures and text of beautiful watches from each historical period.
In summary:
The House of Boucheron is a French family dynasty founded by Frédéric Boucheron in 1858, with the opening of his first store in the Galerie de Valois, at Palais-Royal, during the heyday of the Second French Empire.
Paul Legrand (1840-1910) worked as the chief designer for the house of Boucheron from 1863-1867, and again 1871-1892. He is credited with the idea of combining pearls with diamond rondelles, first seen in Boucheron products in 1889.
During the Art Nouveau period, Boucheron also became known for sculpted designs, often combining chased, enameled gold set with gems and pâte-de-verre. One such example, a gold belt buckle featuring two lionesses biting into a carnelian above a green pâte-de-verre lion's head, demonstrates the brand’s intricate, nature-inspired motifs.
The book shows the early pocket watches which Boucheron released in 1859 and then hundreds of wristwatches, first released in 1885.
After WWII, trends in design swung toward innovation rather than luxury and excess. Parisian taste demanded fine construction rather than the most unique and beautiful precious gems. It is out of this period of innovation that Boucheron's best wristwatches are designed and many of these are shown.
The maison was seemingly obsessed with how a watch attaches to a wrist. Boucheron patented at least three clasp systems that are unlike anything in the conventional watch world.
The Reflet, introduced in 1947, could easily have been made to use spring bars, hooded lugs, a two-piece strap, and a pin buckle but that wasn't the point.
the Carrée, introduced in 1960, could have done the same.
The point was to create a beautifully constructed piece of jewelry that tells the time as opposed to a watch that looks good. Similar to the brand's first watches under Frédéric, integrating time into floral brooches for example.
The book explains how Boucheron did not manufacture watch movements, but used a few suppliers including, most notably, Omega.
The variety of watches offered by Boucheron in these decades is vast. The most collectible models are the Reflet and Carrée though it should be noted that Boucheron did not use these names in period – each was marketed as simply a "wrist-watch."
These appear frequently in the book.
On the contrary to Boucherons competitor Cartier, there is a significant lack of available information on Boucheron watches of this period and This book is the Only one on BOUCHERON WATCHES.
The book conveys the fact that Boucheron was a family business; after the death of its founder Frédéric Boucheron in 1902, his descendants took over the business.
Boucheron er et fransk smykke- og urfirma grundlagt af Frédéric Boucheron i 1858. De har også produceret parfume siden 1988.
