This book is about the policy which British Rail, the UK’s railways network, adopts towards design. The British Railways Board, the senior management of BR Saw good design as central to good business.
In the 1950’s, 20 per cent of Britain’s passenger kilometres and 50 per cent of her freight tonne kilometres were on rail and fyring the sixties and seventies and early eighties, the figures fell to 7 and 11 per cent.
BR had to reorganize so as to be more responsive to customer demand. This reorganisation and modern design changes started in 1970’s.
