Provenance: Stamped Carlton Ware, England, Lustre Pottery.
This playful set of two egg cups and a matching bowl was produced by Carlton Ware in Stoke-on-Trent, England, during the mid-20th century. Each piece is decorated with a molded face motif, complete with blue-painted eyes — a design that collectors often liken to Casper the Friendly Ghost for its cheerful and innocent expression.
Carlton Ware, founded in 1890, became renowned for its inventive and often humorous ceramics. Their novelty ranges of figural tableware were highly popular in Britain and abroad, combining everyday function with a collectible, character-driven charm.
Condition:
Good vintage condition. Crazing to the glaze across all pieces, with light wear consistent with age and use. No structural damage.
Fun fact: Carlton Ware was one of the first Staffordshire makers to register “face ware” as a novelty design — pieces like this were often conversation starters at the breakfast table and remain among the most collectible of their playful mid-century output.
