Pair of Neoclassical-Style Candlesticks
Height: approx. 30 cm (without candles)
Provenance: A collector’s home, Vetlanda.
A pair of plaster or composite candlesticks in matte white, each signed Choder. The design features twisted “Solomonic” shafts rising from square bases with stylized acanthus relief, crowned by foliate capitals supporting candle sockets. The form combines classical antiquity with revivalist traditions, typical of the 19th and 20th centuries when neoclassical motifs were reinterpreted for both decorative and functional domestic objects.
The signature Choder suggests workshop or studio production, likely artisanal rather than industrial, aligning these candlesticks with sculptural decorative art rather than simple household wares.
Condition:
Well-preserved overall. Minor surface chips and imperfections in the white finish, consistent with age and medium. Structurally stable.
Fun fact: The Solomonic column form is most famously associated with Bernini’s 17th-century baldachin at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, and later became a popular motif in European decorative arts and furnishings, admired for its dynamic spiraling form.
