West German “Fat Lava” Vase, Scheurich
Height: approx. 30 cm, diameter: 9 cm
Provenance: A collector’s home, Vetlanda.
A fine example of the West German “Fat Lava” ceramic style, produced by Scheurich Keramik in the 1960s–70s. The vase features a cylindrical form with strong contrast between its glossy, blood-red central glaze band and the heavily textured black and grey “lava” zones at the base and rim. This dramatic surface treatment reflects the experimental glazes and bold palettes that made West German ceramics internationally distinctive during the postwar design boom.
Scheurich, founded in 1928, became one of the most prolific producers of the Fat Lava style and exported widely across Europe and North America. These vases were affordable yet expressive design objects, embodying the optimism and playfulness of mid-century West German domestic culture.
Condition:
Well-preserved with no visible chips, cracks, or restorations. Minor age-related surface wear.
Fun fact: West German ceramics of this period were often stamped simply with “W. Germany” on the base for export, leading collectors today to identify pieces by glaze, shape, and texture rather than factory marks.
