Rare Adjustable Piano Stool by Michael Thonet for Thonet, ca. 1900
Height: adjustable 48–58 cm, Diameter: 36 cm
This sculptural piano stool was produced by Thonet around 1900, attributed to Michael Thonet’s late 19th–early 20th century production. The stool features a steam-bent beechwood frame with a central screw mechanism for adjustable height, supported by a four-legged base. The defining detail is the curved backrest, elegantly shaped in a single sweeping line that terminates in a small headrest, embodying Thonet’s mastery of bentwood innovation.
The underside retains its original construction, consistent with authenticated Thonet workshop pieces from this period. Similar models are held in design collections and have been documented in furniture archives focused on bentwood seating.
Condition:
Very good antique condition. Light patina and wear consistent with age. No structural damage.
Fun fact: Michael Thonet revolutionized furniture design by pioneering bentwood production, enabling not only graceful forms but also affordable mass-production. Piano stools such as this are far rarer than his café chairs, making them highly sought-after by collectors.
