Italian Hand-Carved Alabaster Bookend

Provenance: Purchased in an Italian vintage shop.
This sculptural alabaster bookend was hand-carved in Italy during the mid-20th century. The piece is defined by its domed orb rising from a cylindrical base, a minimalist form that showcases the natural veining and semi-translucent qualities of alabaster. The underside retains its original label: “Genuine Alabaster, Hand Carved in Italy.”
Italian alabaster workshops — particularly in Volterra, long recognized as the country’s alabaster capital — flourished in the 20th century, producing decorative objects and bookends that combined modernist simplicity with artisanal craftsmanship. This example exemplifies that tradition, offering both function and sculptural presence.
Condition:
Good vintage condition. Light scratches and wear consistent with age and use. No structural damage.
Fun fact: When placed near natural light, alabaster’s crystalline structure diffuses the glow, giving bookends like this a luminous, almost ethereal quality.
