Designed in 1954, the “Démon” or Biblio-Démon shelf reflects Mathieu Matégot’s vision of furniture as both architectural and modular. Originally conceived as part of his plan d’exécution de la bibliothèque, the design offered an elegant model for modern home libraries and studies.
The shelving system consists of three vertical black lacquered metal brackets supporting horizontal American walnut shelves, creating a rhythmic interplay of structure and openness. The clarity of line and proportion aligns with Matégot’s broader design ethos, merging industrial materials with artisanal craftsmanship.
Today, reissued by Gubi, the “Démon” remains one of Matégot’s most enduring and collectible designs, valued for its flexibility, lightness, and sculptural presence.
Condition:
Used, showing light signs of wear to the wood and metal consistent with use. No structural issues; stable and well-preserved.
Fun fact: Alongside the “Démon” shelf, Matégot is best known for pioneering the use of perforated sheet metal in furniture — a technique that became a hallmark of his postwar modernist style.
