High Chair in Oak with Cognac-Dyed Vegetable Leather, ca. 1900

Provenance: Stamped with model number 3451 under the seat.
This early 20th-century high chair is crafted from solid oak, paired with a seat upholstered in vegetable-tanned cognac leather. The square frame and stretcher construction give the chair stability and an architectural presence, while the curved backrest introduces a subtle elegance. The leather upholstery has developed a rich patina, reflecting over a century of use.
The underside of the seat features a woven jute webbing support and is marked with the number 3451, providing a trace of its original production. Chairs of this type were commonly found in bourgeois dining rooms and cafés around 1900, balancing utilitarian durability with refined details.
Condition:
Good antique condition with age-related wear. The leather exhibits natural patination, and the oak frame bears minor surface marks consistent with use. Structurally sound.
Fun fact: Vegetable-tanned leather, as seen here, ages uniquely—its surface darkens and acquires depth over time, meaning no two patinas are ever alike.
