Venus de Milo Plaster Cast, ca. mid-20th century
Height: 54 cm, Width: 14 cm, Depth: 13 cm
Provenance: Marked V. J. Milo on the front of the base and A.B on the reverse.
This plaster cast depicts the iconic Venus de Milo, one of the most celebrated sculptures of antiquity, discovered on the island of Milos in 1820 and attributed to Alexandros of Antioch. The cast captures the goddess’s poised stance, with her weight shifted gracefully to one leg, and the flowing drapery wrapped around her hips, leaving her torso exposed.
Such plaster reproductions were popular in the 19th and 20th centuries as educational tools for art academies and as decorative objects in private homes. The impressed marks on the base (V. J. Milo and A.B) identify it as a vintage reproduction likely made in a European plaster workshop during the mid-20th century.
Condition:
Good vintage condition with minor wear and surface marks consistent with age. The plaster has retained its crisp detailing, particularly in the drapery and facial features.
Fun fact:
The original Venus de Milo, housed in the Louvre, is carved in Parian marble and dates to around 130–100 BCE. The absence of arms has contributed greatly to its mystique, inspiring centuries of reinterpretation in art and popular culture.
