Provenance: Artist’s signature and date to verso “C. FRANK 90”; old gallery/inventory label at corner stretcher (no. 00146).
This striking panoramic canvas shows a reclining figure whose head seems to split into a chorus of five mask-like faces. Broad, urgent brushwork in midnight blue, ochre and bone white rides over a dark ground with flashes of red under-painting. The elongated format and vigorous, impasto handling place the work in the figurative-expressionist vein of the late 20th century, balancing raw immediacy with a theatrical, dreamlike stillness.
The painting is presented on its original stretcher with painted edge; hanging wire to the back. The verso bears a large hand-written signature and date “C. FRANK 90”, as well as an older paper label reading “C. Frank / 00146.”
Condition
Good vintage condition. Sound, tight canvas. Minor rubbing and small edge scuffs from prior framing/handling; a few incidental surface marks visible in raking light—nothing distracting.
Fun fact: Extremely wide, “cinemascope” canvases like this were popular with expressionist painters in the 1980s–90s for their storyboard feel—one body stretched across the picture plane can read almost like multiple frames of a film.
