Varebeskrivelse
Safari Chair in Chrome, Black-Lacquered Wood and Leather by Börje Johanson for Johanson Design, 1970s
Height: 73 cm, Width: 64 cm, Depth: 70 cm, Seat Height: 37 cm
Provenance: Produced by Johanson Design, Sweden.
This postmodern safari chair was designed by Swedish designer Börje Johanson for Johanson Design in the 1970s. The chair features a chromed tubular steel frame combined with black-lacquered wooden stretchers and a suspended seat and backrest in thick black saddle leather.
The construction is both functional and sculptural: the floating leather seat is held in place by tension straps that allow for natural movement, resulting in a relaxed yet supportive sitting experience. The polished chrome frame and clean proportions give the piece an architectural quality, while the supple leather introduces warmth and texture.
Johanson’s design language of the era embodies the Scandinavian pursuit of contrast and precision — merging craftsmanship with an avant-garde postmodern sensibility. This chair stands as a refined yet expressive example of Swedish 1970s design.
Condition:
Very good vintage condition with light patina to the chrome and natural creasing to the leather. Structurally solid and well-preserved.
Fun fact:
Johanson Design began as a small upholstery workshop in Sweden in 1953 and evolved into one of Scandinavia’s most innovative modern furniture houses, bridging classic Nordic restraint with playful material experimentation.
