- Discovering a Treasure
Petra, Jordan, surrounded by mountains and gorges is half-built and half-carved in rock. It is no wonder that it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The most famous structure in Petra is the Treasury. The elegant columns and facade are carved in sandstone. As beautiful as the outside is, the inside is a simple cave-like room with two smaller rooms carved at the side.
The Treasury in Petra is one of the most beautiful and amazing places I have seen in my years living and teaching overseas. My family and I visited it often while we lived in Jordan.
Many theories and beliefs exist about the Treasury. Did an Egyptian pharaoh hide his treasure here? Did the Nabateans hide treasure here? No gold or silver treasure has been found.
