Not Total War but a breath of fresh air and an enjoyable, authentic medieval experience.

Having played all the Total War games to date, I was apprehensive to say the least about trying a game from a smaller developer, but I bit the bullet and gave this one a try. I have seen several reviews for this game which say, "If you liked Total War you'll like this." This is misleading - this game is completely different. Personally I find it a breath of fresh air.
Gameplay. The game simulates the Hundred Years War and the campaign mode consists of a map of northern France on which available missions appear throughout the game. There are two main campaigns: an English campaign and a French campaign. Both of these have 16 historical battles and an assortment of optional side-missions to complete. Each of these battles is fought on a 3d tactical map, which can vary in size from ridiculously tiny to a few square miles. The game itself is fought on an invisible grid of squares, each holding a unit of up to 32 men. The ordering system is actually quite unique as it is semi turn-based. The game is paused when you give orders, but you can choose as and when to pause it. This is especially useful as the game only allows you to give an order to one unit at a time and maneuvering an entire army can take some time. It is quite satisfying to watch your army advance in real time after having set several waypoints for your units to follow. You can set up complex flanking maneuvers right from the deployment stage and it streamlines the battles. Unfortunately, the battles are sometimes too streamlined and your units can start off as close as 100ft from the enemy which is somewhat annoying. Combat between units is satisfying to watch although they might have gone a bit overboard with the blood spray and sparks. It is easy to see who is winning a fight because when soldiers are killed a coloured skull floats above them. This looks weird but can be useful for seeing who has the advantage. A really interesting feature of the Great Battles is the army customization mode. You can use money, obtained from the side missions, to purchase weapons and armour for your units. You can unlock these throughout the game. You can adjust the appearance of the soldiers
