In 2014, Iron Maiden's lead singer, Bruce Dickinson, who is a qualified pilot, flew a replica Fokker Dr.1 triplane in an aerial dogfight display at the Sonisphere festival in Knebworth, England, to commemorate the start of World War One. He was part of The Great War Display Team and performed the "dogfight" on July 5, 2014, just before headlining the festival. Dickinson also took his Fokker Dr.1 to the Duxford Air Show in September 2014.
Here are some key details about the event:
The Plane:
The aircraft was a full-size replica of the Fokker Dr.1 triplane, an iconic German fighter from World War I.
The Display:
The aerial display was a "dogfight" re-enactment, with Dickinson flying the Fokker Dr.1 in a simulated battle against other WWI aircraft.
The Purpose:
The display served as a tribute to the centenary of World War One and was a unique experience for the audience at the Sonisphere festival.
The Context:
The display happened hours before Iron Maiden's final performance on their Maiden England World Tour and their headline set at Sonisphere.
