Music copying is an art. Although certain aspects can be as rigid and exact as a science, it can also be inexact, with many rules, but with just as many exceptions.
A copyist's true function is to extract the various parts from a musical score, edit and transcribe them in a legible, correct and completely understandable form for the individual musicians. A properly spaced and notated part allows the player to devote full concentration to his performance rather than being diverted by having to puzzle out a poorly prepared manuscript.
The purpose of this book is to show the techniques and devices employed in properly preparing music for performance in the areas of motion pictures, live and filmed television, phonograph recordings and night club acts. All the material is further applicable to techniques used by publishers of stage band arrangements. Symphonic music and other forms of music manuscript.
The reader should be prepared to spend considerable time and effort to learn to accurately write and place on manuscript paper all of the various notes, signs and symbols that make up the written language of music. Much additional effort should be expended in the practice of grouping together all of these various components, in their many permutations, into a well spaced and balanced whole.
] Until the publication of the 1st edition of The Art of Music Copying, very little information on music copying had appeared in print. As a result, many of the professional copyists were self-taught, having learned the craft through years of observation, trial and error and there were almost as many theories as copyists.
With the consolidation of information and standards established in this book, it becomes possible for today's students to condense time what was once a slow and lengthy learning process.
