The words "maximum security" gained new meaning with the opening of the federal Bureau of Prisons facility on Alcatraz Island in 1934.
U.S. Penitentiary Alcatraz was the end of the line for many hard men. Some were infamous - Al "Scarface" Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelly. Robert "The Birdman" Stroud. Most were not as well known. But all of them came there the same way: they had been transferred from other federal penitentiaries because they were considered incorrigible or otherwise hard to handle.
