Giekewer Traditionsschiff

Giekewer Traditionsschiff, årg. 1978, skrogmateriale Stål, Diesel, hjemhavn SVE Elmshorn (Tyskland), The Giekewer was built in 1978 from shipbuilding steel at the shipyard of Jonny Eimers in Wischhafen/Elbe based on an old original plan of a cargo ewer.
It has a slightly overhanging stem, transom stern with attached single-blade rudder, a 3-bladed fixed propeller and two attached cabin superstructures. The hydraulic wheel steering can be switched to tiller operation.

The material thicknesses used for the hull are
Floor plate 30 mm
Barge plank 8 mm
Side 6 mm
bulwark, deck and superstructure 4 mm

The main deck, the cockpit and the deck of the cabin superstructure are planked and grouted with teak stave decking. The cockpit is self-draining.
On both sides, centerboards are driven over buoys.
A Stehn sturgeon anchor winch with 40 m of chain serves the main anchor, which is run in a hawse on the port side. A stock anchor, as a second anchor to starboard, is operated with the Dutch winch for laying the mast by shifting the gear.

Sails

The ewer has a traditional gaff rig and is sailed with jib, foresail, main and topsail.

Alternatively, a bodder jib of 27 square meters or a broad jib with a wooden yard of 31 square meters can also be used.
The mast, main boom, jib boom and spars are made of Oregon pine.
The mast can be easily set with a jibing device and the aid of a Dutch winch.

Engine

Daimler Benz OM 636 with 34 hp. Internal cooling. Cruising at 1500 rpm with 5 kn.
2x 200 liter stainless steel diesel tanks.


The ship is a small, handy ewer that can also be sailed by a small crew and is ideally suited for the tidal area of our coasts and mudflats due to its shallow draft of 1 meter. It is a well-built and solid ship that can also be used for longer trips.
