Dræb ikke en sangfugl
Gregory Peck vandt en Oscar for sin fremragende præstation som sydstatsadvokaten Atticus Finch, der forsvarer en sort mand anklaget for voldtægt, i denne filmversion af den Pulitzer-prisvindende roman.
Måden, hvorpå den indfanger en tid, et sted og først og fremmest en stemning, gør denne film til et mesterværk. Filmen foregår i en støvet sydstatsby under depressionen. En hvid kvinde anklager en sort mand for voldtægt. Selvom han er åbenlyst uskyldig, er udfaldet af hans retssag så indlysende, at ingen advokater er interesseret i at forsvare ham – med undtagelse af Atticus Finch, byens mest fremtrædende borger. Hans medfølende forsvar koster ham mange venskaber, men han vinder til gengæld sine to moderløse børns respekt og beundring.
