" Denne dagbog blev holdt om bord på skonnerten L'Espiegle på et krydstogt blandt Nicobar-øerne under kommando af kaptajn H. Lewis. Den danske regering gjorde deres sidste forsøg på at kolonisere Nicobar-øerne i 1845. De sendte deres repræsentant H. Busch med kaptajn H. Lewis, der kommanderede skonnerten L'Espiegle ud af Calcutta for at foretage rekognoscering og hævde dansk besiddelse af øerne. Dette tidsskrift giver fascinerende læsning om de oprindelige folks skikke, bolig og handel, samt giver interessante oplysninger om flora, fauna, terræn, mineraler og andre ressourcer. Der er også en beretning om mindst fire hændelser, hvor den oprindelige befolkning brutalt myrdede den udenlandske besætning og plyndrede deres skibe i havnene. "Til alle personer, som måtte besøge øerne Pulo Caudul og Great Nicobar, bekræfter vi hermed, at vi denne dag har hejst det danske flag på disse to øer, har genoptaget besiddelsen deraf i Hans Danske Majestæt, Kong Christian VIII".

"This diary was kept on board the schooner L'Espiegle on a cruise among the Nicobar Islands under the command of Captain H. Lewis. The Danish government made their last attempt to colonize the Nicobar Islands in 1845. They sent their representative H. Busch with Captain H. Lewis, who commanded the schooner L'Espiegle, out of Calcutta to make a reconnaissance and assert Danish possession of the islands. This journal makes fascinating reading on the customs, habitation and trade of the native people, as well as providing interesting information on the flora, fauna, terrain, minerals and other resources. There is also an account of at least four incidents where the native population brutally murdered the foreign crew and plundered their ships in the ports. "To all persons who may visit the islands of Pulo Caudul and Great Nicobar, we hereby confirm that we have this day hoisted the Danish flag on these two islands, having resumed possession thereof in His Danish Majesty, King Christian VIII".
