Sammendrag: Of the great number of psychoanalytic studies of literary subjects that have appeared during the recent past, this work by Freud's biographer and his greatest living disciple is by far the best. Dr. Jones begins with a comprehensive view of the Hamlet literature in all languages and after discussing his objections to the previous explanations of the Hamlet problem points out that the true explanation can only lie, as is always the case with mysterious inhibitions, in the sphere of unconscious conflicts. The question of Hamlet's being insane has long been debated, but Jones argues that the problem is rather more subtle than critics have so far admitted, for Hamlet's malady, as Shakespeare gives it, was of that more frequent intermediate sort which nowadays goes by the name psychoneurosis. Thus he undertakes a psychoanalytic investigation of Hamlet's curious mind as it relates to the general psychological conditions foreshadowed in the Oedipus legend.
