For Sale: Leica Leitz Summaron-M 35mm f/2.8 “Little 8” – A True Hidden Gem
Up for sale is the legendary Leitz Summaron-M 35mm f/2.8, affectionately known as the “Little 8.” Often overshadowed by its rare and pricey sibling—the 35mm Summicron “8-element” V1 (worth up to 40,000 kr)—this lens offers identical optical performance from f/4 at a fraction of the price.
Crafted in the 1960s, this compact masterpiece delivers incredible sharpness from f/4 and above, easily rivaling modern computer-designed optics. How? Simple: physics. The lens features high-quality Schott glass fused with lanthanum and was designed by the legendary Walter Mandler. You might ask, why a lanthanum glass is a deal? Here’s why:
1. High Refractive Index, Low Dispersion
Lanthanum glass has a high refractive index (bends light more efficiently) without significantly increasing chromatic aberration. That’s the holy grail for lens designers—it lets them design faster lenses that stay sharp and color-accurate, even wide open.
2. Compact Designs, Outstanding Performance
Because lanthanum-based glasses bend light so effectively, they allow for more compact lens designs without sacrificing image quality. That’s a big part of how a tiny lens like this Summaron can outperform bulkier modern lenses.
3. Less Aberration, More Microcontrast
Lenses made with lanthanum glass tend to produce better microcontrast and more controlled spherical and chromatic aberrations. That’s why these older Leica lenses have that 3D “pop” or signature rendering that modern lenses oftentimes struggle to emulate.
4. Rare and Costly
Lanthanum is a rare-earth element, and lenses using it were often more expensive to produce. It’s part of what makes vintage lenses with lanthanum glass not only high-performing but also collectible.
It also stops down to f/22, giving it a creative edge for street photography and deep-focus scenes—where everything from 0.85m to infinity is crisp and in focus (similarly to a 28mm at f/16). (Minimum focusing distance: 0.7m.)
Not just for photos—this lens shines in video too. Expect gorgeous organic rendering, a signature red glow and rainbow flares at f/2.8 that modern lenses can’t replicate.
