The IRS (Infinity Reference System) was an ultra-high end system, selling at $65,000 in the 1980s. It consisted of 76 EMIT tweeters, 24 EMIM midrange drivers, and twelve 12-inch polypropylene woofers in four towers. The Reference, and later Kappa series, were discontinued when Harman Kardon acquired Infinity in 1983.
Infinity Oreus consists of a subwoofer and five identical satellites. The kit is more expensive than the "familial" Modulus, but the LF/MF driver is almost twice as large - each satellite is built according to the d'Appolito scheme. Universal rack-brackets are included. To carry out the switching, it is necessary to remove the cover fixed on the screws, fix the rack in the desired position (satellite/center) and run the cable through it. For the floor installation, appropriate by style and design racks are provided as an option. The service panels of Oreus and Modulus subwoofers are completely identical, but Oreus subwoofer, in addition to the low-frequency driver, contains two more passive radiators mounted on the side faces.
The main appeal of the Oreus sound image is its high purity and clarity of details; perhaps, by this feature, Oreus satellites look preferable than Modulus ones (high frequencies are in moderation). When the AV receiver is working, it seems that no sound ups and downs are able to bring satellites out of balance. Intervention of the sub is perceived somewhat different than in the case of Modulus - bass is drier, almost without color, although sometimes you want more clarity in the processing of percussion sounds fronts. But, the situation can be partly corrected by changing the bandwidth. Undoubtedly, the sound merits of Infinity Oreus completely justify the difference in cost with the "familial" kit: its sound is more balanced, and the bass is more accurate.
