Elephant Gambit, Niels Jørgen Jensen m.fl., emne: hobby og sport, Niels Jørgen Jensen, Tom Purser & Rasmus Pape: »Elephant Gambit 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d5.«
This opening, not unlike the Latvian and Blackmar-Diemer gambits, is often disparaged: however, it can quickly turn the tables on an unwary or overconfident opponent. In English it's called the Queen's Pawn Counter Gambit. The Germans use an equally cumbersome name, Mittelgambit im Nachzuge, and the Russians don't even have a name for it. In the absence of any international appellation, the authors – two Danes and an American – refer to the moves 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 d5 as the Elephant Gambit.
The product of thorough research an personal experimentation, this book includes games from 1842 through 1987, from Howard Staunton through the young FIDE master Stefan Bücker. For an opening usually dismissed in a paragraph or two the authors provide 84 pages of games and analysis, systematically organized, with 63 diagrams, an index of variations, and an index of names. This is not an opening for the faint of heart. Rather, as Grandmaster David Bronstein once wrote, it is for those „who believe in their own creative strength and have nothing against a turning aside from well-trodden theoretical paths on the second move.“
