Om Værket:
Ralph Martin's commentary on "James" in the Word Biblical Commentary series lives up to the excellent scholarship exemplified in most of the volumes of the Word Biblical Commentary series. His commentary will be of most value to the New Testament student with a working knowledge of Greek. At the same time, there are sufficient insights of a general nature that even the reader without a background in NT Greek will benefit from this commentary. His introduction, in which he considers the standard questions of date, place and purpose of writing, and the like, is excellent. And he gives a helpful analysis of the relationship between what James says regarding faith and works and what we find in the Pauline corpus.
Martin follows the general pattern found in the WBC by beginning each passage of James with an original translation, including footnotes related to the interpretation of the original Greek, followed by a section titled "Form/Structure/Setting, in which technical matters regarding the text are discussed. This section will be of most value for someone looking for a detailed analysis of the text itself, as well as problems that arise in understanding the text. The last two sections, "Comment" and "Explanation," provide more of an overview of the passage and contain material that will be of interest to the general reader as well as the scholar.
