Beskrivelse: "One approach to the reality of literacy lies in relating the working of a script to the way it is learnt, and to how it is read. Its origins and history are also relevant, because they may set preconditions for the context and manner of its use (Schenkel 1983). It is not clear whether writing was invented independently in Egypt, but there is no direct systematic dependence on another script. The earliest and the latest hieroglyphic texts work on the same basic principles, although there is constant development. There are historical variations (and indeed variations according to text genre), in the sophistication with which those principles are applied, and in the explicitness with which the script encodes the phonemic and semantic levels of the language. The pictorial signs of the hieroglyphic script (Gardiner 1957; Schenkel 1976; 1984) fall into two categories-'semograms' that indicate meaning, and'phonograms' that encode."
